CUFOS provides a valuable service to the community by offering a venue that can be hired for parties, meetings, classes, and other activities at an inexpensive rate. The organization was founded by volunteers and continues to be run by local volunteers – but we always need more to help keep the building and grounds in good order, and to assist with bookings and paperwork. Among the things you can do are:
This task involves maintaining the calendar for parties and special events, answering phone and email inquiries about bookings, taking bookings from hirers, receiving and filing forms and payments, liaising with the CUFOS Treasurer on payments and refunds, and a few other clerical tasks. There would also be liaising with the officer in charge of non-party bookings. Altogether anywhere from three to five hours a week would be needed.
The weekend duty officers take turns monitoring weekend hires, with responsibilities including getting keys to hirers for parties and events, being on call if needed for an emergency, and checking the building after an event to make sure the hirers have left it clean and tidy. This typically involves a commitment of one weekend (sometimes half-weekends) every three months. The more duty officers we have, the fewer weekends they have to give up for the cause.
Volunteers who can be on call when needed for special cleaning or maintenance chores, or special tasks such as supervision of building work, would be greatly appreciated. Currently the day-to-day care of the building is covered, but occasionally special circumstances arise where it would be good to have volunteers we can call on to help.
We could use a backup Minutes secretary for our committee meetings, in addition to other secretarial help that is sometimes needed (e.g., updating contact lists, obtaining information from groups, maintaining paperwork).
If you live in the area and think you can help in some way, then please write to firstname.lastname@example.org, or call 07791 648885. (Please note: as the work involved is sporadic, we are unable to take on student interns.)
Potential volunteers are also invited to attend CUFOS committee meetings, which are held four times a year on a Monday evening in the Booking Hall. Information on upcoming committee meetings is posted on our Home Page.
